Frequently Asked Questions: Competitions
This section is designed to keep every team informed and on an even playing field. All questions that are asked by a student, coach, or parent pertaining to the competitions or the tournament are answered and posted here.
ALL BUILDING EVENTS Question: When doing the events such as Tower building or other building events, do the event supervisors post the results from each team as they progress so each subsequent group can see what they need to beat or is it all private until the end of the day?Answer: All scores are kept private throughout the day. Absolutely NO POSTING of times/scores/etc. will take place at the State Tournament.
Answer: The Mellencamp Pavillion is 90,000 square feet. It is an indoor practice facility for football. Ceiling height is 72 feet. Above 72 feet are rafters. The air ventilation system will be shut off on tournament day. Question: Will test flights be allowed?
Answer: Yes, we have a designated area for test flights. Question: What happens if our plane gets stuck up in a light fixture, rafter or in a net?
Answer: If the plane cannot be retrieved using a helium filled Mylar balloon, the device will be left where it landed. We will NOT rent an elevated work platform (often referred to as a cherry picker) to retrieve the aircraft.
Answer: The INDIANA State species list will be used.
Answer: We will use the rules posted on the State website.
Question: Can we participate in a trial event even though we did not indicated we were on the pre-registration form??
Answer: Yes, we are prepared for every team to participate in every trial. We just wanted some idea of how many teams were planning ahead to do the trial events. Question: Who can compete in the trial events?
Answer: Any student from your school may compete in a pilot or trial event. That means official competitors, observers, and alternates may compete.The maximum number of competitors per school can be found in the official rules for each trial event.

Question: Can you provide a description of what will be used for the CD port and if a screw will be used to lock the CD in place?Answer: Yes, we are prepared for every team to participate in every trial. Answer: We will use a standard CD/DVD motor (as directed by the written guidance). The CD will pop over the hub. One needs to only have 2 mm of free space on the side of the CD facing the fan in order to accomodate the hub (see photos below).
